BUYING THE FARM
If you've always wanted to buy organic food from a local farm, now you can join the Community Supported Agricultural program (CSA) at San Juan Capistrano's Organic farm and farmstand at South Coast Farms.
Members receive a large or regular size basket of seasonal organic foods once a week or bi-weekly. Baskets are filled to the brim with local fruits and vegetables, many harvested the day before.
Just a sampling of what could be in a basket: sweet Chandler strawberries, artichokes, arugula, green beans, carrots, super sweet white corn, fragrant delicious Ambrosia cantaloupes, Italian and Japanese eggplant, sweet Walla-Walla onions, oranges and peppers.
A regular basket averages about 25 pounds of produce, and a large averages about 35 pounds. Members can pick up the basket from the farm or at one of the eight drop-off locations throughout Orange County.
Memberships are purchased and renewed on a quarterly basis, with a one-time registration fee of $10. Membership costs: Large baskets weekly for 14 weeks at $35 per basket ($490); bi-weekly for 7 weeks at $35 per basket ($245); regular baskets weekly 14 weeks at $28 per basket ($392); and bi-weekly at 7 weeks at $28 per basket ($196).
Prices are subject to change. Social events are also hosted by South Coast Farms including festivals, strawberry picking day and potlucks.
