Memorial Day Celebrations in OC

Memorial Day is almost here, and with it, a time of remembrance, tradition, and the unofficial beginning of summer. Here are some local events and observances that you can join.

59th Annual Garden Grove Strawberry Festival
The 59th annual Strawberry Festival on Monday, May 29 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. takes place at the Village Green, between Euclid and Main Street in downtown Garden Grove. There will be hundreds of booths set up on the grounds offering food, hand-crafted items and souvenirs. Try your luck at a game of chance on the Midway. Head over to the Showmobile to catch one of the great musical acts. The Amphitheatre will be the site for some lively performances and contests.

Memorial Day Services in Anaheim
The Orange County Cemetery District will host Memorial Day Services on Monday, May 30 at 11 a.m. honoring veterans at Anaheim Cemetery. All services are open to the public and attendance is free. Services will be held rain or shine. Seating may be limited. However, you can bring a blanket or chair to sit on. For more information call 949-951-9102, extension 10.

Veterans of War Memorial Day Event, Dana Point
The VFW Post 9934 and the City of Dana Point will present a beautiful 90-minute Memorial Day Service in Pines Park on Monday, May 29th from 10-11:30 a.m., overlooking the blue Pacific honoring the sacrifices made by our nation to earn our freedom. This Memorial Day Service will include special recognition for Vietnam veterans, as a part of the events of the National 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Vietnam War. The Program is recognized as an official event of the National Commemoration Committee. Bring your children, your parents, and your friends and pay respect to those who gave so much. Memorial Day Ceremony, Huntington Beach
This annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m., hosted by the American Legion Post 133, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Jewish War Veterans features a 21-gun salute, flag-raising and playing of taps. Local dignitaries will also be in attendance. This event is open to the public. At Huntington Beach Pier Plaza on Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway.

Memorial Day Ceremony in Irvine
The City of Irvine will host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. in the Formal Garden at the Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park. Attendees will have the opportunity to memorialize the troop’s sacrifice by writing down a brief remembrance to be posted on a memory board at the event. Cards will also be available for well-wishers to send a message of appreciation and support to members of Irvine’s adopted 2/11 Marine Battalion. 949.724.6715

Memorial Day Half-Marathon, Laguna Hills
This favorite Memorial Day running event takes place in the beautiful Orange County cities of Laguna Hills, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Woods, and Laguna Niguel. Runners and walkers of all experience levels are invited to come out and enjoy the Memorial Day festivities! With a half marathon (13.1 miles), 5K Run/Walk (3.1 miles), 10K Run/Walk (6.2 miles) and a Kid's Run (1/2 Mile), there is something for everyone! All events and the Finish Line Expo will take place on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, 2017. The half marathon, 5K and 10K both start in front of the Saddleback Memorial Medical Center and finish at the Laguna Hills Community Center. Memorial Day, San Clemente
Join in the Memorial Day observance at City of San Clemente Community Center with keynote military speaker Lt. Col. Luke McConnell, Mayor Kathy Ward, color guard teams dressed in authentic uniforms, patriotic music, and a Presentation of Wreaths and Flowers, Bag Pipers and Tap Buglers. This event is free and co-sponsored by the local chapter of VFW, South Coast Detachment, Marine Corps League, Orange County Sheriff Department, MOWW, and many civic organizations and volunteers.
