WALKABLE BEACH GETAWAY!
02.23.12
By Sheryll Alexander
As a travel editor and hotel reviewer, I have visited some the best hotels in The West. My favorites, however, are charming boutique hotels. Small and located in cool neighborhoods, boutique hotels allow guests to live more like a local.
In OC, South Laguna is home to some of the coolest new (and old) boutique hotels. All of these reasonably-priced accommodations are located within walking distance of each other in the center of South Laguna, which is one of OC’s most hip neighborhoods filled with grocery stores, designer shops, coffeehouses, recreation outfitters and some of Laguna’s best fine dining restaurants and casual café eateries.
Laguna Riviera
Laguna Riviera has been a reasonably-priced boutique hotel in central South Laguna since the 1970s. Families love “The Riviera” for its ocean view rooms, casual décor, daily breakfast and an indoor water playground with cool saltwater pool, hot whirlpool and play room. The Retreat in Laguna
The Retreat in Laguna may be OC’s hottest new boutique hotel. Set on a South Laguna alley and just steps from the sand, the apartment-like rooms at “The Retreat” are cozy, luxurious and include full kitchens and fireplaces. Plus, The Retreat focuses on bringing health-minded getaways right to your South Laguna doorstep. http://www.theretreatinlaguna.com
Pacific Edge
Formerly Vacation Village, Pacific Edge is now a fully refurbished on-the-sand property managed by boutique hotel chain, Joie de Vivre. This full-service boutique resort includes The Deck restaurant and five new “cabana” suites with decks right on the sand. http://www.pacificedgehotel.com
Hotel Seven4One
Right across the Gaviota Drive alley from The Retreat in Laguna is Hotel Seven4One. With only 12 rooms, Seven4One is a tranquil oasis of contemporary décor and high tech amenities along South Laguna’s Pacific Coast Highway. http://www.seven4one.com
